WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High School Wolverines are now 2-0 in the Region after defeating the Calhoun Falls Charter Blue Flashes 42-16 on Friday night.

The Wolverines were first on the board Friday night when Jaylen Brown made a touchdown with six minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The PAT was unsuccessful, but the Wolverines led 6-0.

The lead continued to increase as Brown ran 53 yards with a little over a minute to go deep into Blue Flash territory. Bailey Holloman finished things up with six.

Once again, the extra point was unsuccessful.

The second quarter saw much of the same for the Wolverines, starting with an early interception by Holloman. The Wolverines would hit the end zone again with a little more then four minutes on the clock, thanks to a pass from C.J. Saverance to Alan Stanley.

Late in the second, the Wolverines made another trip to the house with a Holloman/Stanley connection, but yet another missed PAT left the score 26-0.

Whitmire intercepted again just before the whistle but was unable to capitalize on the turnover before time expired.

The half ended 26-0, Whitmire.

In the third, it was a defensive showdown as both teams were held scoreless until the Blue Flashes snuck six with a little more than two minutes to go in the third.

A two-point conversion brought the score to 26-8.

The Wolverines did not take this lightly and with 48 seconds left in the quarter, Quentin Aughtry crossed the goal line changing the board to 34-8.

In the fourth, Little hit the end zone with seven minutes left. PAT was good and the Wolverines surged ahead to 42-8.

“I am glad that our seniors could go out in style. All seven of them contributed to the win Friday night. Alex Little had a great night. He scored the first touchdown of his career and also added two catches for two-point conversions. He is probably the hardest working senior in the weight room and he is a four-year Letterman so I’m glad it worked out like that for him,” said Head Coach Charlie Jenkins.

A last minute rally by Calhoun Falls brought the score to 42-16 — but it was too little, too late.

Final score: Whitmire 42, Calhoun Falls 16.

“The next two weeks decide the Region Championship. Friday’s win locked up a playoff spot for us. Our senior class has made it to the playoffs all four years of high school.” Jenkins said. “This is the first time we have been to the playoffs four years in a row since the glory days when Whitmire made the playoffs for 12 straight seasons from 1972-1983.”

The Wolverines are now 2-0 in the Region after defeating the Blue Flashes.
