SPARTANBURG — The Newberry College women’s tennis team swept Converse 7-2 on Wednesday in their first match since the ITA Tournament.

Rebeca Martinez had an impressive day for the Wolves, earning wins at No. 2 doubles in a pairing with Lucia Davila and in singles play at the third flight.

Martinez and Davila recorded an 8-2 victory in doubles play before Martinez swept her Converse (1-1) counterpart 6-1, 6-1. Davila excelled in the fifth flight of singles play, outlasting her opponent 6-0.

At the first doubles flight, Amanda Carrillo and Elissa Aguirre took down their counterparts, 8-3. Converse picked up the third doubles point on a Newberry forfeit.

The Wolves dominated singles play, winning five of the six matches they participated in. Carrillo and Aguirre dominated their competition, taking their sets 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-0. Marta Gomar swept her opponent, securing the set 6-0, 6-0.

Newberry will be back in action on Oct. 7 against Emmanuel. Match time is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
