NEWBERRY — The Wolves scored a late goal in Wednesday afternoon’s South Atlantic Conference match up against the Catawba Indians of Catawba College, but were unable to erase a two-goal deficit as Catawba emerged with a 2-1 victory.
Newberry (2-5, 1-2 SAC), was was out shot 4-0 in the first 15 minutes of the match. The Indians’ (3-2, 2-0 SAC) Becky Frost was the first to record a goal, racing up the middle and shooting to the left of the goalie. Newberry struggled to get its offense going, falling behind 12-2 in shots at the half.
The Wolves were markedly more aggressive in the second half, however, holding the Indians to only two shots. Alyssa Ortega and Jacqueline Aldrete both had good looks, but were not able to connect on either shot. A second goal by Frost doubled Catawba’s lead in the 68th minute. Ortega scored the lone goal for the Wolves with 1.1 seconds remaining, but Catawba controlled the ensuing kickoff to close out the one-goal victory.
Ortega was able to record eight shots on the afternoon, scoring the late goal and forcing the Indians’ goalkeeper to make one save. Goalkeeper Jayleen Gant made four saves in the match. The Eagles’ edged the Wolves in shots 14-12, with seven of their shots on frame.
Newberry takes on the Bulldogs of Wingate on Sept. 23 at Smith Road Complex. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
