NEWBERRY — The Newberry College Wolves came up short in a nail-biting 3-2 volleyball match against Coker. This was Newberry’s second five-set game within the span of three games with their record standing at two apiece.

Kills by Sidra Triplett, Toni-Anne Whitlow, Tricia Davie helped propel the Wolves to a 6-3 lead to start the fifth set. Newberry held a 14-12 lead until a Cobra kill and an attack error from the Wolves tied the game 14-14. Leads continued to be exchanged until back-to-back kills from Annie Mansfield gave Coker the 20-18 victory.

Ties were frequent early in the fourth set with the score evened 11 times before the final tie at 16 apiece. Newberry was able to pull away late and a kill from Whitlow secured a set win 25-20.

Newberry led the entire first set, separating themselves by as many as 11 points. A kill from Vanessa Blas capped off a strong start with a 25-18 win to give the Wolves the 1-0 lead. Blas had a career-high 14 kills in the game.

The next set proved difficult for Newberry who struggled to keep up with the Cobras. A kill from Sidra Triplett got the score to within two at 16-14, but a service error from the Wolves ended the set 25-20.

Newberry battled in the third set and exchanged leads with Coker throughout the frame. Ultimately, the Cobras were able to tally five straight points to top the Wolves 25-20 and gain the 2-1 lead.

The Wolves had a season-high 70 kills, with Whitlow, Triplett, and Blas recording double-digit kills. Taylor Garrison posted a double-double with 47 assists and 19 digs.
