NEWBERRY — The Newberry College women’s soccer team spent a lot of time on the defensive end as the No. 11 ranked Eagles of Carson-Newman had majority of the possession in Saturday night’s contest en route to a 2-0 win.

Carson-Newman’s (5-0, 2-0 SAC) Lauren Wade gave the Eagles the early lead with a shot off a corner kick that bounced to the left of Wade and dribbled in.

The Eagles and Newberry (2-4, 1-1 SAC) would go scoreless for the next 30 minutes until Ashley Hickman scored the second goal of the night for Carson-Newman.

Newberry was held to five shots and two shots on goal in the contest. Alyssa Ortega was able to record three shots on the afternoon, including the Wolves two shots on goal.

The Wolves defense had impressive moments throughout the game. Carson-Newman, who averages four goals per game were held to just two in the contest.

Goalkeeper Jayleen Gant made seven saves in the match up. The Eagles’ out shot the Wolves 22-5, with nine of their shots being on frame.

The Wolves return to Smith Road Complex on Sept. 20 to face Catawba. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
