TIGERVILLE — The Newberry women’s tennis team had an impressive afternoon, sweeping North Greenville 9-0 in the first match of the 2017-18 season for both teams.

Lucia Davia had an impressive day for the Wolves (1-0), earning wins at No. 2 doubles in a pairing with Elisa Aguirre and in singles play at the fourth flight. Davia and Aguirre recorded an 8-1 victory in doubles play before Davia swept her North Greenville (0-1) counterpart 6-0, 6-0 for a dominant straight-sets victory.

At the first doubles flight, Amanda Carrillo and Marta Gomar edged their opponents 8-4. Newberry picked up the third doubles point on a North Greenville forfeit.

The Wolves continued their impressive afternoon by taking all six singles points. Carrillo defeated her opponents 6-2, 6-2 while at No. 2 singles, Aguirre was able to shut out her North Greenville opponent 6-1, 6-4. Gomar would go on to handle her opponent at the third flight by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Forfeits in the final two positions handed Newberry the sweep.

Newberry will participate in the ITA Southeast Regional Championship tournament starting Sep. 29 in Sumter. The Wolves’ first home match is set for Oct. 4 against Converse at 3 p.m.
