Wolves edge North Greenville in 5-4 win

The Wolves defeated the Crusaders 5-4 to record their first win of the 2017-18 season.

TIGERVILLE — The Newberry men’s tennis team notched victories over North Greenville on Friday. The Wolves defeated the Crusaders 5-4 to record their first win of the 2017-18 season.

In doubles action Edison Ambarzumjan and Jose Navarro initiated the Wolves (1-0) success downing their opponent 8-4. In flight two Jordon Monosky and Logan Adkins fought in a tough battle edging the Crusaders 8-7. Alex Amble and Nikhil Mannepalli finished the doubles sets recording an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles pairing.

With two players forced to play up a pairing due to injury and a forfeit at No. 6 singles, Newberry earned critical wins at the top two flights to take the decision.

In No. 1 singles Ambarzumjan pulled off the victory dropping the North Greenville opponent 4-6, 6-3, 2-1. Following suit was Navarro, who edged his opponent 6-3, 7-5. Newberry would drop the remainder of the single matches. In flights three and four Monosky and Adkins could not hold the win and fall to the Crusaders 6-7, 3-6 and 4-6, 3-6.

Newberry will participate in the ITA Southeast Regional Championship tournament starting Sep. 29 in Sumter. The Wolves’ first home match is Oct. 1 against Johnson C. Smith at 10:30 a.m.
