NEWBERRY – Newberry College’s athletic department announced the Wolves’ student-athletes earned a cumulative grade point average over 3.0 for the first academic year in school history.

Earlier this summer, it was announced that 72 Newberry College student-athletes had earned D2ADA Academic Achievement Awards and 152 Wolves had met the requirements for South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll accolades.

The Newberry College athletic department consists of 19 varsity sports whose student-athletes had compiled over 34,000 credit hours in their academic careers at the end of the Spring 2015 semester. The 533 student-athletes who represent the athletic department had compiled a 3.0097 cumulative grade point average.

“I’m extremely proud of all our student-athletes’ academic accomplishments, and the department’s cumulative grade point average is evidence of all of their hard work,” said Newberry College athletic director Matt Finley. “The outstanding faculty at Newberry College put countless hours and effort into the education of all of our students, and this recognition should also go to that fantastic group.”

Of the 19 varsity teams, 14 had team GPAs over 3.0, including an impressive 3.407 GPA from the women’s basketball squad.

“In the last few years, we have instituted many different programs to further support our student-athletes’ academic success, and this department-wide honor proves that those programs are working,” said associate athletic director for student services Emily Bikowski. “Our Center for Student Success, academic tutoring programs, academic enrichment opportunities and continued diligence by our faculty, support staff and coaching staff to improve the academic standing of our student-athletes have been great assets, and I look forward to continued academic improvement in our athletic program.”
