NEWBERRY — First-year head coach Callie Youngman has released Newberry’s 29-match volleyball schedule for the 2017 season featuring the two-day Newberry Invitational to begin the season and seven games against 2016 NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Championship participants.

“After making some waves in 2016, we are excited to get our 2017 campaign started,” Youngman said. “We are hosting a strong pool of teams this year for the Newberry College Volleyball Invitational on September 1 and 2. This will provide us with some tests early in our season and allow for our beloved/rowdy Wolves Family to see us compete.

“Playing 12 matches in the first 19 days of our season will be a good challenge for our program. We like challenges and hope to see our Newberry Volleyball faithful in the stands this fall.”

The Wolves open the season with a two-day volleyball extravaganza at Eleazer Arena, hosting 12 hours of volleyball on Sept. 1 and Sept. 2 with 12 total matches featuring six teams from across the Southeast Region.

Newberry travels to Francis Marion for a similar event the following weekend, then begins South Atlantic Conference play with perennial power Wingate and fellow postseason participant Lincoln Memorial among their first three league opponents.

The Wolves will play three straight home games on three separate occasions throughout the season and play four of their final five dates at home. Senior Day will take place on Nov. 11 against Catawba.

The 2017 South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship quarterfinals will be played on campus sites Nov. 14 before the semifinals and finals take place on the campus of Carson-Newman Nov. 17 and Nov. 18.

Newberry is coming off one of its best seasons in program history, ending the 2016 campaign with a Newberry NCAA-era record 20 wins, a third-place finish in the SAC standings, and a seven-week span that saw the Wolves rattle off 16 wins in 19 matches.

The Wolves will open their season with the Newberry College Volleyball Invitational Sept. 1-2.
