NEWBERRY — On June 13, Chapin-Newberry’s American Legion team (Post 193/24) hosted Lexington’s Post 7 in a baseball double header.

C-N defeated Lexington in both games due to excellent pitching, hitting, and defense.

In the first game, C-N built a five run lead in the first inning, adding two more runs for a 7-5 win. Preston Farmer was the winning pitcher, tossing four innings, giving up zero runs, three hits, and striking out seven. Trey Huber started the game, throwing three innings, yielding seven hits and striking out three.

Completing the battery for both pitchers was Chandler Todd. The losing pitcher for Lexington was Kolby Leitner who pitched all six innings while striking out seven and walking two.

Leading hitters for C-N were Robert King with three hits and Trey Kinard with two hits. Caleb Boozer had two hits to lead Lexington at the plate.

In the second game Tristan Smaltz threw a no-hitter as C-N defeated Lexington by a score of 11-1 (10 run rule) in a five-inning game. Smaltz faced only 14 batters, struck out seven, while walking five and yielding only one unearned run. Completing the battery for the no-hitter was Taylor Wiggins.

Leading hitters for C-N were Will Kroske (3-4), Robert King, (3-3), Chandler Todd (2-2), Jordan Beatson (2-2), and Ward Hacklen who stroked a two-run homer in the first inning. Jay Beber scored Lexington’s only run.

Chapin-Newberry Legion Post’s (193/24) record now stands at 8-1 as they prepare for the annual NC-SC Challenge at Riley Park in Sumter on June 16 and June 17.

Three North Carolina teams (Wilmington, Greenville and Salisbury) will play three South Carolina teams (Chapin-Newberry, Florence, and Sumter).
