NEWBERRY — Desmond Pressley of Hemingway High School has signed to play basketball for Newberry College.

Pressley led his squad to a Class 1A state championship and was named the 1A Player of the Year after averaging 19 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Desmond was named the Region 6 Player of the Year and participated in the North-South All-Star Game. Pressley was also selected to the All-Hoop Zone Team by WPDE 15 in Myrtle Beach.

“Desmond is a perfect match for our style of play,” said Dave Davis, head coach of the Newberry College men’s basketball team. “He can get end to end of the basketball court in a split second. He had a great workout when he visited with us, and he can do all things offensively and has a chance to be an incredible defender. We return almost our entire team, but Desmond will have a chance to make an immediate impact.”

Pressley scored 45 points against 5A state-runner up Blythewood High School in the Pepsi Classic, leading Hemingway to a 67-64 victory. Hemingway won their final 16 games of the season on their way to a 22-5 record and defeated Lewisville 72-71 to win the 1A South Carolina State Championship.
