NEWBERRY – Shelby Grimes from Charleston Collegiate has signed to play basketball at Newberry College.
Grimes led his squad to a South Carolina Independent School Association State Championship after averaging 21.3 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game, and shot 39 percent from beyond the arc.
“Shelby can really shoot the basketball, which in our system makes him very dangerous, but that is only a part of his offensive game,” said Dave Davis, head men’s basketball coach at Newberry College. “This is a young man who has his best basketball ahead of him and are very fortunate to have him joining our basketball family.”
Grimes was named to the All-Region team, the SCISA State All-Tournament team, and the Lynwood Moody Holiday All-Tournament team. He was selected to play in the South Carolina (SCISA) vs. Georgia (GISA) All-Star game, scoring 27 points and was awarded Most Valuable Player.
“Shelby was a joy to coach. He was a great teammate and tireless worker,” said Charleston Collegiate coach Antoine Saunders. “He is a tough, aggressive player that happens to be one of the best shooters that we as a staff ever coached. Newberry is getting a superb basketball player and a great kid.”
