HICKORY, N.C. – Elizabeth Williamson earned her 50th career singles victory as the Newberry women’s tennis team bested Lenoir-Rhyne 7-2 Saturday afternoon at Hickory High School.
On Friday, the Lady Wolves gave a valiant effort against No. 39 Queens University of Charlotte, falling 5-4 to the defending South Atlantic Conference Tournament champions at the Cayce Tennis Center.
Williamson won her 13th match of the season on Saturday at the No. 1 singles slot, 6-0, 6-3. The match also marked a career milestone for the senior from Canterbury, New Zealand, as she notched her 50th career victory in singles matches. Williamson has an overall career record of 50-9 in singles play at Newberry.
Newberry (12-5, 4-1 SAC) took two out of three matches against Lenoir-Rhyne (7-8, 1-4 SAC) in doubles play. Williamson and Amanda Carrillo won 8-4 at the No. 1 position, while Lucia Davia and Kelly McManus scored an 8-5 win at No. 2.
Carrillo won her match at No. 2, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, while Marta Gomar recorded a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 3. Davia (6-4, 6-2) and Rebeca Martinez (6-3, 6-3) gave Newberry its final points of the match at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Newberry will travel to Tennessee next weekend, facing Tusculum (10-4, 5-0 SAC) and Carson-Newman (3-5, 2-2 SAC). The match against the Pioneers is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
