NEWBERRY — The Newberry College women’s basketball team has entered the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll for the first time this season.
Newberry received a few votes in the week one poll, however, they weren’t enough to crack the top 25.
With a huge shake-up in the top 10 this past week, Newberry finds themselves at No. 23 in the second regular season WBCA poll of the 2016-17 season. The Wolves 5-0 start to the regular season, which included wins vs. Claflin, Armstrong State, and Limestone, have turned some heads to the young squad who has only one senior on its team.
Despite the season being in its early stages, the Wolves’ have four starters who are averaging double figures. Sophomore Meg Essex leads the team tallying 16.8 points per game.
The WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches’ Poll Committee is made up of 24 head coaches at NCAA Division II institutions, one from each conference.
Newberry will begin South Atlantic Conference play when they host Wingate University on Wednesday, Nov. 30th at Eleazer Arena. Wingate defeated Newberry in the SAC semifinals last season, before clinching the conference title in a 73-62 win vs. Anderson.
