NEWBERRY — Newberry College men’s basketball players James Ashby and Mitch Riggs have been named to the 2014-15 NABC Honors Court.

The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom.

Riggs (Langwarrin, Vic, Australia) earns the award for the second consecutive season. He was named the South Atlantic Conference’s men’s basketball scholar-athlete of the year in March. Riggs averaged 13.2 points per game in 29 games played in 2014-15.

His career-high came against Catawba in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. He also averaged 3.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game during the campaign. He tallied double digits in 22 of 29 games played this season. Riggs was named to the South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman team during the 2012-13 season.

Off the court Riggs has earned multiple academic honors. During this academic campaign Riggs was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, as voted on by the regional sports information directors. He has also garnered the Division II Athletic Director’s Association Academic Award for the third consecutive year. He carries a 3.71 grade point acerage while majoring in physical education.

Ashby (Auckland, New Zealand) is named to the Honors Court for the first time. In 2014-15 he averaged 6.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game with season highs of 16 points against North Greenville and Southern Wesleyan.

He has been named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll multiple times and has earned the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award. He carries a 3.762 grade point average while majoring in business administration.
