NEWBERRY — Newberry College women’s soccer player Alyssa Ortega has been named the Chick-fil-A Student-Athlete of the Month presented by Sodexo for October 2016.

Ortega, a junior from Venice, Calif., scored seven goals in October notching 14 points for the month. She tied the school record for goals in a season with 15, in a hat trick effort vs. Brevard on Oct. 19.

Ortega carries a 3.5 grade point average and she spends time helping out county recs during the week. She also volunteers her time in the offseason at the animal shelter, and at the local elementary school reading to kids.

The South Atlantic Conference league office named Alyssa to First-Team All-Conference last week. Ortega also earned Women’s Offensive Player of the Week for the Eastern College Athletic Conference on Oct. 25 for her performances that helped Newberry go 2-0 on the week at Brevard and at Mars Hill. The junior recorded eight points in two games.

The award will be given every month and honor one Newberry College student-athlete for his or her on-field performance, academic achievement and community involvement. The award recipient will be honored on the Chick-fil-A Newberry College Student-Athlete of the Month presented by Sodexo wall in Eleazer Arena.
