NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves women’s basketball team is set to host the Stokes-Trainor Conference Challenge to kick off the 2016-17 season.

Games are slated for Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12.

The teams that will join Newberry in the Challenge will include Belmont Abbey, Coker and Limestone.

The schedule for the weekend is listed below:

Friday, Nov. 11

Coker vs. Limestone – 2:00 p.m.

Belmont Abbey vs. Newberry – 4:00 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 12

Coker vs. Belmont Abbey – 4:00 p.m.

Limestone vs. Newberry – 6:00 p.m.

Newberry defeated Belmont Abbey to open the 2015-16 season by a final of 87-56. The Wolves then went on to face Limestone, who was ranked No. 11 at the time, losing by a final of 56-41.

The Wolves went 2-0 vs. conference foe Coker last season winning by final scores of 86-76 and 67-60.

Newberry is coming off a 17-13 overall record in 2015-16, including a 15-7 record in the South Atlantic Conference. The will be led by returning players in Meg Essex, Nicola Handreck and Samara Hill.

Belmont Abbey is coming of an 8-21 overall record last season, which includes a 7-15 record in the Conference Carolinas. The Crusaders will be led by senior forward Gabrielle Bethel and junior guard Alex Busch.

Coker is coming off a 9-19 overall record and an 8-14 conference record in the SAC. They will be led by junior guard Kendra Lambert.

Limestone is coming off a 30-1 overall record in 2015-16 as they went undefeated in the Conference Carolinas at 22-0. The Saints are ranked 9th in the Division II Bulletin preseason poll. Senior Jasmine Kearse was also named the Women’s DII Bulletin Preseason Player of the Year.
