ORLANDO, FLA. — Newberry continued a string of top-five finishes in every tournament played this year, finishing fifth of 18 teams at the 2016 McDonough Cup in a field containing nine of the top 46 Division II teams in the latest Golfstat rankings.
The Wolves shot 11 over in the final round of the 54-hole event, but held off hard-charging California Baptist, ranked No. 28 nationally, by a single stroke to retain a top-five finish. Tournament host and ninth-ranked Rollins won the event at three under, followed by No. 46 Flagler at six over. No. 10 Lander and No. 29 Georgia College finished tied for third at 11 over, 10 strokes ahead of the Wolves.
Newberry was led by Spencer Skiff, who earned a 10th-place finish at two over for the tournament. Skiff leads the Division II Golfstat Cup rankings and has now finished inside the top 10 in each of Newberry’s four events this season, carrying a win-loss percentage of .941 in 2016.
Harry Bolton was the second finisher for Newberry, coming in 23rd at five over for the tournament. Evan DeGrazia and Ben Thompson finished at eight and nine over par in 31st and 36th position, respectively, while Luke Atack was 54th of the 95 golfers in attendance at 13 over par.
Newberry turned in a steady team performance on Tuesday, with three golfers carding a 75 joined by one at 74 and another at 76 on the par-72 course.
Jakob Van de Flierdt of host Rollins was the individual medalist at six under for the tournament. He was followed closely by Ethan Chamineak of Georgia Southwestern and Thomas Hodges of Georgia College at five under. Ryan Mosley of Flagler and Greg Gonzalez of California Baptist rounded out the all-tournament team at three and four strokes behind Van de Flierdt, respectively.
