ORLANDO, FLA. — Newberry continued a string of top-five finishes in every tournament played this year, finishing fifth of 18 teams at the 2016 McDonough Cup in a field containing nine of the top 46 Division II teams in the latest Golfstat rankings.

The Wolves shot 11 over in the final round of the 54-hole event, but held off hard-charging California Baptist, ranked No. 28 nationally, by a single stroke to retain a top-five finish. Tournament host and ninth-ranked Rollins won the event at three under, followed by No. 46 Flagler at six over. No. 10 Lander and No. 29 Georgia College finished tied for third at 11 over, 10 strokes ahead of the Wolves.

Newberry was led by Spencer Skiff, who earned a 10th-place finish at two over for the tournament. Skiff leads the Division II Golfstat Cup rankings and has now finished inside the top 10 in each of Newberry’s four events this season, carrying a win-loss percentage of .941 in 2016.
