WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High School Wolverines are getting ready for their last game of the regular season, and the Region 1-A Championship.
The Wolverines will take on the McCormick High School Chiefs on Friday night.
The Wolverines have a current overall record of 4-5 and are 2-1 in the region. The Chiefs are also 4-5 for their overall record, but are 3-0 in the Region. This will be the first time the two teams have played each other since 2014 when the Chiefs beat the Wolverines 31-9.
This game will serve as the Region 1-A championship. The last time the Wolverines played for a region championship was in 2007 when they beat Christ Church.
If the Wolverines win tonight, Coach Charlie Jenkins said it would be a validation.
“It would validate our plan and all the hard work the players and coaches have done,” he said.
Tonight’s game will also act as Senior Night, Jenkins said that even if they were 0-9 the seniors would still be fired up for their last regular season home game, but playing for a championship makes it crazy.
The Wolverines currently have 11 seniors on the team: Daquan Agnew, Noah Armstrong, Colton Evans, Will Gilliam, Matthew Mathias, Chase McCarley, Hunter McCullough, Culan Means, A.J. Renwick, Chop Ruff and Devin Vo.
“Should be a big crowd, perfect weather. Everything we have done since the spring time has led to Friday night, every workout, every meeting. I cannot wait to see our guys play, it should be fun,” Jenkins said.
