NEWBERRY — Alyssa Ortega won the Women’s Offensive Player of the Week for the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the league office announced.

Ortega, a junior from Venice, Calif., helped Newberry go 2-0 on the week in wins on the road at Brevard and Mars Hill.

Ortega posted a hat trick in a 6-0 win at Brevard, which marked her second three-goal game of the season. The last came just two weeks ago in a 3-0 win vs. Bob Jones.

Ortega then notched her 15th goal of the season in a 5-1 win at Mars Hill to give her eight points in two games, as well as a shot on goal percentage of .600. That percentage also hovers at .578 for the year.

The 15 goals puts Ortega in a first place tie in school history for goals in a season. The same stat also puts her in a tie for first in the South Atlantic Conference. Nine of the 15 goals on the year have been scored in conference matches, which is good for first in the SAC.

Ortega currently ranks third in the SAC in points tallying 31. The Newberry Wolves hold a record of 7-1 in games in which Ortega has scored a goal.

Newberry plays their last game of the regular season as they host Lenoir-Rhyne on Oct. 29. Kick off at Smith Road Complex is slated for 1 p.m.
