Wolves sweep Anderson in volleyball


ANDERSON — The Newberry College volleyball team continued its winning streak by sweeping South Atlantic Conference foe Anderson 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) Tuesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.

The Wolves move to 12-10 overall in 9-5 in South Atlantic Conference play. Anderson drops to 12-10 overall and 8-6 in SAC play.

Newberry was led by Andie Meredith’s 11 kills. Madison Darby-McClure notched 10 kills and five total blocks. She also posted a match-best .588 hitting percentage. Sidra Triplett contributed nine kills and a .467 hitting percentage. Maggie Marsh dished out a match-high 35 assists and Kensley Jordan tallied 17 digs.

The first set was tied at 12-12 before Newberry went on an 11-4 run to lead 23-16. Anderson attempted a late rally but the Wolves held strong to win the first set by a score of 25-19. Meredith led Newberry with five kills in the set.

Anderson led early in the second set 2-0 before Newberry rallied to lead 7-3. The Trojans tied the set at 9-9 before the Wolves used a 11-4 run to lead 19-13. Anderson attempted another rally and pulled within 19-18. Kills by Logan Hayward and Toni-Anne Whitlow gave Newberry a 25-20 set two victory.

The third set was back and forth before Newberry pulled ahead 13-9. Anderson hung around the remainder of the set before Newberry won the third set 25-18 and the match 3-0. Four Wolves had three kills in the set. Newberry had a match-best .257 hitting percentage as a team.

Bachel Burts had 11 kills for Anderson. Emily Conlin dished out 27 assists and tallied 17 digs.

Newberry will travel to Lincoln Memorial (17-3, 11-1 SAC) Friday for a 7 p.m. South Atlantic Conference match. LMU swept Newberry earlier this season on September 16.
