CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Newberry College field hockey team (5-8) was defeated in its final non-conference match of the season 6-0 by Queens University of Charlotte (6-5) Wednesday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex.

Queens took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Maha Clarke. Only a few minutes later, Mazvita Mtisi scored to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. Newberry countered with two great opportunities by Kristyna Oyola and Caitlyn Warren.

Both shots were saved by the goaltender. Newberry had another opportunity following three straight penalty corners towards the end of the first half. Courtlyn Warren’s shot was blocked in front of the goal.

Dakota Elzy made a sprawling save to keep Queens off of the board in the final minute of the half. The Royals led 3-0 after the first half.

Queens scored two goals early in the second half. Oyola had a great scoring chance towards the end of the contest. She took a ball from the midfield moved into the circle and ripped a shot that was saved. The Royals scored two late goals to win 6-0.

Courtlyn Warren led Newberry with three shots. Caitlyn Warren notched two shots on goal. Lauren Wolfgang scored two goals for Queens. Mtisi notched a goal and an assist.

Allison Davis notched a save and two goals against in a losing effort. Elzy stopped six shots and had four goals against. Miranda Childers had six saves earning the shutout for the Royals.

Newberry will host Bellarmine (9-5, 3-2 ECAC) on Friday at Setzler Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
