NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry held its annual Youth Football Camp last week at Newberry College’s Setzler Field.

Collin Shealy, program coordinator for the city’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, said the camp had 45 participants. The camp was held July 20 through July 22.July 20-22

Shealy said Brandan Davis led this year’s camp. Davis also hosts camps around the state for his foundation “The Faithful Walk-On.” Davis is a former USC Gamecock and current defensive backs coach for Dutch Fork High School.

Shealy said a number of youth coaches also assisted each of the three days including Preston Bookman, John Dunbar Jr., CC Epting, Mike Harmon and Max Hutchinson.

Each day of the camp, participants ranging from ages 8-12 took part in a number of drills including the agility ladder to speed up their footwork as well as receiving, tackling and relay quickness stations.

On the final day of camp, each coach led a team of seven to eight players in short scrimmages that drew out the best of competition in everyone, Shealy said.

The camp was capped off with a four-team tug-of-war competition.

“It’s great for our participants to have an opportunity to compete on a college football field and we are very thankful to Newberry College for that,” Shealy said. “The camp gives each player a taste of the upcoming football season and you can just feel the excitement in the air during those three days.”

Registration for football and cheerleading for the city of Newberry will continue through Aug. 14. Contact the city of Newberry PRT Department with any questions at 321-1015.
