DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Newberry’s women’s golf team opened play at the LeeAnn Noble Memorial at the Achasta Golf Club Monday, firing a 24-over 312 to finish the first round in 10th position.

Montevallo leads the tournament by nine strokes at four over par, while the second- through 10th-place teams are in a nine-team logjam separated by 11 total strokes.

The tournament field includes 13 teams, three of which compete in the South Atlantic Conference. The Wolves sit three shots back of ninth-place Lincoln Memorial and 25 strokes ahead of 11th-place Catawba.

Karly Mims and Nabila Inak finished the afternoon tied for 17th at four over on the par-72 course. Taylor Lance was just one stroke behind as part of a six-way tie for 23rd. Annabelle Dallery was 11-over in 51st position, while Johana Lunackova finished her round 15 over par in 61st.

West Alabama’s Savannah Payne and Elaine Wood of Montevallo are tied atop the leaderboard at three under par, with UNC Pembroke’s Ashlii Thompson in hot pursuit one stroke back. Six golfers are tied for fourth place at a stroke over par.
