Royals rally to knock off Newberry in 5 sets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Newberry College volleyball team (9-9, 6-4 SAC) saw its five game winning streak snapped, as Queens (10-4, 7-2 SAC) rallied to win the final two sets for a 3-2 (25-17, 21-25, 25-27, 25-18, 15-8) South Atlantic Conference victory Friday night at the Levine Center.

Logan Hayward led the way with 18 kills and nine digs. Toni-Anne Whitlow collected 11 kills and Maggie Marsh dished out 42 assists. Natalie Willis recorded a team-high 15 digs.

Neither team could gain much separation early in the first set as the two teams combined for 10 attack errors. Newberry led 12-11 before an 8-2 run by Queens gave the visitors a 19-13 lead. Queens took set one by a score of 25-17. Hayward led the Wolves with four kills in the set.

Queens once again ran out to a lead in set two as they led, 11-8. Newberry used a 5-0 run to grab a 13-11 lead. The Royals made a few more runs at the Wolves, but Newberry remained on top to win 25-21 after a kill by Madison Darby-McClure. The Wolves totaled 16 kills as a team in the set for a .273 attack percentage.

After Newberry trailed 11-8 in the third set, the Wolves used a 4-0 spurt to grab a 12-11 lead and force a Royals timeout. The rest of the set was back and forth as it was tied seven times between the two sides.

Newberry led 24-21 before Queens tied the set at 24-24. Meredith Jones put the Royals up 25-24 but Newberry scored three straight points to win the third set, 27-25.

Queens led in set four 6-2 before the Wolves tied the set at 7-7. The Royals then used an 11-3 run to lead 18-10 and went on to win the set, 25-18. Queens posted a match-high 17 kills as a team in the fourth set.

The Royals continued their strong play in the fifth and final set. Queens led 10-4 and eventually won by a score of 15-8 to win the match, 3-2. Newberry recorded only two kills and committed four errors. Queens hit a match-best .412 in the fifth set.

Jones led the Royals with a match-high 20 kills. Jessica Raines collected 14 kills and Sydney Kunz had a double-double for 43 assists and 11 digs. Alex Thompson tallied eight total blocks for Queens.
