SPARTANBURG – The Newberry women’s cross country team tied for fifth place out of eight teams in the traditional 5k distance at Saturday’s Upstate Invitational.

The team ran with an average time of 21:54.63 and a total time of 109:33.15. beating out Columbia International and U.S.C.-Aiken. Newberry was in a tie for fifth place with Columbia (S.C.).

Leading the way for the Wolves was freshman Emily Shuler with a time of 20:49.39, followed by sophomore Michelle Ling at 21:59.72 and freshman Brittani Barratt 21:59.86.

Also competing for Newberry was junior Rebecca Burkhart with a time of 22:04.33, sophomore Alex Zimmer coming in at 22:39.85, freshman Alyssa White at 22:54.64, and sophomore Hayden Francis at 27:03.85.

The women’s team will compete next on Oct. 14 in the 5k distance at the Augusta Invitational at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.
