EAST ROCKAWAY, N.Y. – Caitlyn Warren scored the game winning goal in overtime as the Newberry Wolves field hockey team (2-5) picked up a 1-0 non-conference win against Molloy (1-5) Saturday afternoon at Bay Park.
Newberry dominated the game offensively, peppering the Molloy goaltender with 37 shots, 16 of which were on goal. The Wolves also were stout on defense, allowing only one Lion shot all afternoon.
In the 76th minute, Caitlyn Warren was left all alone in the circle as her shot skated past the goalie into the far corner of the net off the woodwork. It was her fourth goal of the season. Maia Lee notched her first collegiate assist on the goal after a great leading pass.
Newberry took 15 shots in the first half, six of which were on frame. Dakota Elzy recorded her only save of the afternoon in the first half. She made a diving save on a Lion breakaway to preserve the clean sheet.
The second period featured 11 penalty corners and 17 shots from the Wolves. Arianna Ovadia kept the Wolves off the scoreboard as she continued her strong play. Newberry had multiple attempts to end the contest in regulation but could not break down the Molloy defense.
Warren led the way with 13 shots, seven of which were on frame. Kristyna Oyola and Courtlyn Warren had eight shots apiece. Elzy picked up her second win of the season and her first shutout.
The Wolves had 19 penalty corners compared to Molloy’s two. Lauren Keller recorded the only shot of the game for the Lions.
