GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Newberry’s (3-8, 1-4) chances came at a premium, but they failed to put it past Tusculum (6-2-2, 4-0-1) goalkeeper Miriah Martin, as the Pioneers skidded past the Wolves on Sunday in double overtime with a final of 1-0.

A shot from Peyton DeHart at the top of the box found its way past Newberry keeper Kodi Jean Johnson, who ended the match with six saves. On a push by the Pioneer forwards, the ball came right to the feet of DeHart on a well-placed pass from teammate Katja Andersson, as the shot barely left the ground. It was her first goal of the season.

Johnson kept the game at zero in the first overtime with a terrific save to keep Newberry alive. On a ball going for the top right corner from Pioneer Carlie Thornber, Johnson’s quick reaction caused the ball to glance off the crossbar. The ball was eventually cleared out by the Newberry defense, who helped get in the way of many shots provided by Tusculum on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves’ had many chances of their own to grab the lead late in regulation, as chances from Erika Linch and Alyssa Ortega fell by the wayside. A wide shot by Ortega in the 75th minute, and a header by Linch just 90 seconds later off a corner kick, barely missed the post.

Those were the last chances that Newberry would have, as Tusculum’s strike in the 107th minute, helped them stay undefeated against SAC teams.

Ortega led the Wolves’ with two shots, and Katelin Morris added the only shot on goal for Newberry.

In the 28th minute, another chance blossomed for the Wolves’ as a corner kick from Morris found Lindsay Huber. A strike from the senior went through everyone but the goalpost.

The Wolves’ will continue their conference play on Oct. 5 when they host Anderson at Smith Road Complex. Kick-off is at 1 p.m.
