NEWBERRY – The Wolves’ (2-5, 1-3) posted two goals in the 10th minute and never looked back as they powered their way to a 5-0 win against Coker (2-3, 1-2).

Liz Gutierrez put the Wolves’ on the board first as she sped past the Coker defense with the help of a beautiful lead pass from teammate Sara Silvestro.

Just 53 seconds later, Alyssa Ortega found herself on a 2on1 break and ripped a shot past Coker goalkeeper, Shelby Middelton, to quickly put the Wolves’ up 2-0.

Ortega then added her second goal of the match seven minutes later on a set-up from Daphne Heyaime. It was Ortega’s fourth goal on the year.

Erika Linch added Newberry’s next two goals to give the Wolves’ a 5-0 lead going into the half. In the 24th minute, Linch put back her own header that was initially saved by the Coker goalkeeper.

With minutes left in the first half, Linch then put in a header off a Newberry corner kick from Sara Silvestro. Silvestro ended the match with two assists and one shot. Linch is currently tied for fourth in the SAC with five goals on the year.

In a rainy and wet affair, the Wolves’ pounded 34 shots, 15 of which were on frame. Five of those 15 shots on goal came from Ortega, Linch led the way with seven shots, Morgan Powers added five shots, and Ragan Hill also added four shots.

The Cobras added nine shots in the match, five of which were on goal. Newberry goalkeeper Korina Martinez finished the match with five saves and a clean sheet en route to her first win on the year.

The Wolves will travel to Wingate on Sept. 24 as they take on the Bulldogs at 5 p.m.
