NEWBERRY — The Newberry College volleyball team played in front of a rocking home crowd at Eleazer Arena but came up short, as Anderson defeated the Wolves 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-20) on Tuesday night.
The match moves Newberry to 3-6 on the season and 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Anderson is now 5-4 and 2-0 in SAC play.
Logan Hayward notched six kills in the first set to lead the Wolves. Andie Meredith also played well, adding four kills. Anderson led the way early, but four straight Newberry kills gave the Wolves a 14-13 edge.
The Trojans tied the set at 23-23. Hayward and Meredith deposited back-to-back kills, giving Newberry a 25-23 set win, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Anderson struck the ball well in the second set as the Trojans ended with a .239 attack percentage. Newberry tied the set three times at the tail end of set number two. Tori-Anne Whitlow’s kill tied the set at 25-25. Anderson notched the next two points to win the set 27-25. Whitlow also led the Wolves with five kills in the set.
Anderson raced out to a 10-3 lead in the third set. Newberry answered back to tie the set at 11-11. The Trojans used an 11-3 run to take a 22-14 lead. The Wolves attempted a rally but came up short, dropping set three, 25-20. Marissa Mitter led the Trojans with five kills.
The fourth set was another back and forth affair between the two sides. The set was tied at 10-10 before Anderson used an 8-0 run to lead 18-10. Newberry closed within four at 24-20 before Mitter gave the Trojans the match with her 20th kill of the evening. The Wolves had four blocks and Anderson had five in the fourth set.
Hayward led Newberry with a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs. Meredith and Whitlow added 10 kills apiece. Natalie Willis had 21 assists and Maggie Marsh posted 19 assists. Four Wolves finished with double-digit digs.
Mitter led the Trojans with a game-high 20 kills and 16 digs. Rachel Burts had three solo blocks and six block assists. Emily Conlin accumulated 41 assists.
The Wolves will play again Friday when they host Lincoln Memorial (5-1, 2-0 SAC). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
