SALISBURY, N.C. — The Wolves (1-4) were unable to find their rhythm on the pitch in Wednesday afternoon’s conference opener at Catawba College (1-1-1) as they were defeated 3-0.
Just under two minutes into the match, Newberry’s Jessica Will put early pressure on the Catawba goalkeeper, Liz Nail. Will lofted a shot from about 30 yards out, but a retreating Nail batted it over the crossbar.
Bailey Howell put Catawba on the board first just prior to the 10th minute with a shot from the left of the box, as Newberry goalkeeper KodiJean Johnson’s diving deflection wasn’t enough to keep it out. It was Howell’s second goal of the season.
Johnson ended the half with five saves, and goalkeeper Madison Putnam added two saves in the second half.
Catawba’s Caitlin Hill pushed the lead to two with seven minutes remaining in the first half. On a long through ball from teammate Nicole Duncan, Hill’s shot from the top of the box found the back of the net. Kiersten Peck added the third goal for Catawba in the 67th minute.
Newberry had plenty of chances to get on the board as they let off 15 shots, six of which were on frame. Alyssa Ortega had three shots in the match, two of which were on goal.Morgan Powers added another five shots for the Wolves. Both teams had finished the match with 15 shots apiece.
Newberry will face off against another conference opponent on Saturday as they take on last year’s SAC champion, Carson-Newman (4-1) at Smith Road Complex at 1 p.m.
