NEWBERRY — Tonight the Newberry High School Bulldogs will take on the Chapin High School Eagles. Both teams currently have a 2-1 standing.

Last year the Bulldogs lost to the Eagles 35-13.

“We beat them the last three or four years prior to last year, but they handled us pretty good last year. Of course, we want to avenge what happened last year,” said Head Coach Phil Strickland. “We are working on us, and we are our biggest enemy right now.”

Strickland said that the Eagles like to mix things up: they can run the ball well and throw it well. He added that the Eagles have really good receivers as well as talented tight ends.

“We just cannot give up big plays. They are a big play team. We cannot give up chump plays. Last year they beat us on a lot of the big plays. That is basically what we are trying to alleviate, giving up big plays to them,” he said.

Last week the Bulldogs lost to Batesburg-Leesville 21-19. Strickland said they cannot afford to turn the ball over tonight like they did last week, due to the fact that Chapin does not make a lot of mistakes.

During practice this week the Bulldogs have been working on eliminating some of their mistakes. Strickland said while at times they do things well, it seems that one or two people blow an assignment, and they are working to get out of that.

Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. at Chapin High School.
