NEWBERRY — Not even a downpour could dampen the momentum of Chapin-Newberry American Legion baseball Wednesday as the club overcame soggy field conditions to log a 13-1 win and sweep Greer 3-0 in playoff action.As of 5:30 p.m. the infield at Newberry College contained a lot of water but by 8:15 p.m. the Newberry College grounds keeper had the field ready for Greer Post 115 and Chapin-Newberry Post 193-24.Chapin-Newberry staked a strong claim to a sweep in the bottom of the second by sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Justin Hawkins led off with a single and scored from first on a single by Chad Davis.

 

Bank robbery suspect apprehended in Newberry County

NEWBERRY — Newberry County Sheriff’s Deputies apprehended a bank robbery suspect Thursday around 11 a.m. in partnership with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.According to the NCSO the section of Interstate 26 west bound near S.C. Highway 219 was closed so deputies could position themselves on exit ramps with tire deflation devices.The suspect avoided the devices but ran off into the shoulder of the road where he was apprehended without incident....

Grant awarded to improve Newberry community

NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry was awarded $706,863 for West End Mill Village water and sewer upgrades due to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.Communities across the state are slated to benefit from public improvement projects supported by nearly $13.3 million in funds from the program.
