The Newberry County School District sets aside scholarships for students who attend college in the field of education. Each recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship. To qualify students must plan to major in education, have a 3.0 grade average, an SAT score of at least 850 on math and verbal, or an ACT score of at least 18. Retired Whitmire Community teacher Susan Lawson, who is also a candidate to become a Master Gardener, shared her expertise with fourth-grade students to help prepare them for PASS testing. Little Mountain Boy Scout Troop 61, sponsored by the Ruritan Club, is proud to announce that Michael Allen Morris completed his Board of Review on Dec. 12, and has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Morris’ rank advancement was celebrated by family, friends and fellow Scouts at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on April 143 at Macedonia Church. Michael is the 16 year old son of Kathy and Terry Morris of Prosperity and has been a member of Troop 61 since 2007. 2012 was the 100th Anniversary of the Eagle Scout and a special Eagle Rank was presented to Michael to commemorate this benchmark. Michael will be attending the National Jamboree at The Summit Bechtel Scouting Reserve in West Virginia in July along with 2 other scouts from Troop 61. For his Eagle Scout service project, Michael provided the leadership for, planned, secured funds for and organized the replacement of decorative landscaping at the Ruritan Building in Little Mountain. NEWBERRY COUNTY — Camp Wild is a residential camp held jointly by several county 4-H programs, Newberry included. This camp is held June 25 through June 27 at Chester State Park in Chester. Curcio graduates from Brevard
BREVARD, N.C. — Phillip Andrew Curcio of Pomaria graduated from Brevard College during its 160th commencement ceremony on May 11 with a bachelor’s degree in health science studies. Curcio also earned honor roll for the spring semester of the 2012-2013 academic year. To be eligible for the honor roll, students must be enrolled full-time and earn a grade point average of 3.0 to 3.49 during the semester.
