NEWBERRY — Mayor Foster Senn received updates regarding the Boundary Street Bridge replacement project Tuesday.
Robert J. St. Onge Jr., secretary of transportation for S.C. Department of Transportation, responded to Senn in a letter that stated their response to the city’s concerns.
The SCDOT will be taking time, as suggested by the city, to consider and evaluate other possible options to the city’s proposal of relocating the Boundary Street Bridge.
“Boundary Street was one of Newberry’s first streets and remains a vital street to the city and many of our citizens. We’ll continue to advocate keeping Boundary Street open and our preference of saving the historic bridge,” Senn said.
The engineering staff at SCDOT has been instructed to continue communication with the city before making any final assessments.
Present development schedule has the project’s planned construction contracted for later in 2014, which allows time to evaluate comments and concerns.
As the project advances through the development process, a formal public meeting will be held. A date for the meeting has not yet been decided.
“We’re pleased the SCDOT will look at possible options to the current proposal of relocating the bridge. We thank Secretary St. Onge and the DOT staff,” Senn said.
