A Newberry officer was shot overnight.
Two Newberry Police officers were responding to a domestic call between 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and midnight when shots came through a door. The call was at 2405 Fulmer Ave. which was between Pope, College and Nance streets.
After the suspect, William Blair Frazier, 30, of 2405 Fulmer Ave., Newberry, fired the weapon through the door a projectile struck one of the officers in the arm and the officer was taken for medical treatment at a Midlands hospital.
Around 2 a.m. Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said the officer that was injured appears to be fine and a Newberry Police Department statement said the officer is in stable condition this morning.
A host of area law enforcement converged on the area around Hillcrest, Fulmer and Reid streets near the Oakland area and between Nance and College streets.
Officers that responded came from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, S.C. Highway Patrol, and the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.
Also the S.C. Law Enforcement Division SWAT team was called to the area.
Officers converged on the the house and a perimeter was quickly established, according to Newberry Police Captain Kevin Atkins.
SLED agents tried for several hours to contact Frazier without success, said Atkins.
Around 3 a.m. a SLED robot entered the residence and found the resident to be deceased.
Newberry Coroner Craig Newton has listed the cause of Frazier’s death as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers repeatedly tried to make contact with the subject, who was reportedly still in the house.
A couple minutes before 3 a.m. the situation was under control.
As in all cases in the state where an officer is involved in a shooting, SLED has been called to investigate the incident.
The identity of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released.
Newberry police thanks all the agencies that assisted with the incident.
“The department asks that everyone keeps the injured officer in their thoughts and prayers,” said Newberry Police Chief Jackie Swindler.
