School district recognizes student writers

NEWBERRY — Almost 200 student writers had their stories published in this year’s Newberry County School District anthology.

Students along with family, friends and teachers filled every inch of the Newberry Elementary auditorium for the awards ceremony in which each student received a certificate and a copy of the book. In addition, each school has a copy as does the district office.

This year’s theme was Putting the Pieces Together and there was no limit to what the students could write about, making way for a wide variety, said Paige Cromer, a teacher and president of the Newberry County Reading Council.

The anthology has been an annual project for at least a decade. Three winners are selected from each grade level chosen by the school’s curriculum coordinator. Then the Newberry County Reading Council makes its selections. Some grade levels at a few schools were not fully represented.

Christopher DeWine, a fifth-grader from Little Mountain Elementary, based his story on a personal experience.

“I wrote about a fear I have — heights. I overcame it when I flew in a helicopter at the Little Mountain Reunion,” said DeWine. While he said writing isn’t his favorite subject, he said this was easy once he got into it.
