NEWBERRY — Twenty years ago, Chelsea Williams received a liver transplant as an 11-month-old. Although fortunate for it to have lasted so many years, Williams is now in need of a second liver transplant.
Williams was hospitalized at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, the night of Christmas Day. Since that time, she has undergone extensive medical testing and studies to determine the exact causes for the rejection of the first transplanted liver.
Evaluations for Williams to receive a second liver transplant began Feb. 4 and have required several trips to the Medical University of South Carolina.
After surgery, Williams is required to live within a short distance of the hospital for several months. Because of the family’s mounting medical expenses, a fundraiser will be held April 27 at the Newberry Shrine Club.
Barbecue chicken tickets will be sold for $8, with the pick up time being between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Live entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. and last through 8 p.m. A bake sale is at 2 p.m.
Proceeds will go to benefit the Williams’ family medical expenses during her medical transition and future hospitalization. Those willing to help can also give directly by making deposits at TD Bank in Chapin, Irmo and Newberry under the “Chelsea Williams Fund.”
