NEWBERRY COUNTY — One Newberry College professor hopes to transform his idea into reality as he is looking to for a county wide civic orchestra.
Victor Vallo teaches music at the college and is looking for string players beginning now throughout August so that the county can have a Newberry County Civic Orchestra like other communities such as Lake Murray and Columbia have.
Vallo said he is seeking amateurs and professionals who play violin, viola, cello and double bass.
“I would like to cast a wide net by inviting any and all who play or have played an orchestral string instrument to consider being the founding members of this new community orchestra,” said Vallo.
Vallo pointed out that about 150 years ago, the New York Philharmonic started as a community orchestra. It’s all about the people in the community and it’s for the people in the community, he said.
As for the age group, it’s open to anyone from high school age and up, he said.
“If we grow, we can add on a full symposium orchestra,” said Vallo.
Rehearsals will start in August and will be at Newberry College.
