NEWBERRY — Newberry prepares for take off Sunday as pilots and aviation fans from around the state check in for the Newberry Airport Fly In.
Newberry is the 12th stop along the S.C. Breakfast Club’s schedule this year. They plan to make at least 16 more stops around the state.
This is a first for the Newberry airport to host the breakfast club’s fly in.
Local aviation enthusiast Jim Offutt said to expect more than 50 planes to fly into the airport. He also emphasized that there will be a breakfast served starting around 9 a.m. but it is $7 a plate. Local businessman Billye West is providing the breakfast along with his daughter, Misty.
This is not just for pilots, Offutt said. Pilots and non-pilots alike can fly or drive in and chat all about planes. He did say the club is looking for “old and bold” pilots to join them.
The S.C. Breakfast Club is led by president Gerald Ballard and has met around the state and surrounding states every other Sunday since 1938 chatting about planes and flying planes. In fact, they only missed events during World War II when fuel was not readily available.
This club has no dues and people become members just by showing up.
“The only rule is to fly safe” is the only rule they go by.
