Storms damage four homes
by Cindy Pitts
Senior Reporter

A micro-burst is being blamed for doing damages Thursday night.

The storms hit just after 8 p.m. with most of the damages being done in the Silverstreet, Bush River and Prosperity areas.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster says the storm started just north of Silverstreet and drifted to Bush River and on to Prosperity.

He added the storm moved slow as another hung over the Silverstreet area.

“The heat builds up and these storms just collapse,” said Foster.

The weather service believes the storms caused a micro-burst which brought down numerous trees.

Damages were done to four houses in the county located on Trinity Springs, Bel-Ivy, Belfast and Cy Shumpert roads.

At the Bel-Ivy home trees hit three cars in the yard and the mobile home.

The storm also caused the Trinity power substation to go down which left residents from the Belfast area to Deadfall to Highway 395, to Silverstreet to Island Ford Road without power until the early hours of Friday morning.

Some 1,340 customers were without power with most being in the Silverstreet and Trinity areas.

Newberry Electric crews worked until after 5 a.m. Friday getting the electricity restored.

Some co-op workers were still out working after 9 a.m. Friday but 99 percent of the electricity had been restored.

Also, firefighters from Prosperity, Silverstreet, Bush River and Friendly along with the Newberry County and Prosperity rescue squads and the S.C. Department of Transportation worked to open roads that were closed.

The storms also brought some welcomed rains with around half-a-inch in parts of the Silverstreet and Bush River area and a report of 1.4 inches in Prosperity.

But while some people saw rain, their neighbors did not get any.

Pop-up storms are possible throughout the weekend.
