Miss SC contestant visits local schools

NEWBERRY — After her crowning as Miss Newberry College, Ariel Fox has set out to fulfill her dreams and compete in the Miss South Carolina pageant in July.

Not only is Fox raising awareness for the Children’s Miracle Network, which is the overall philanthropy of the pageant, but she has recently volunteered her time to read to young children in the elementary schools of Newberry County.

Already, Fox has visited Boundary Street Elementary School and Prosperity-Rikard Elementary School. At both schools, Fox has visited kindergarten through second grade classrooms. During her visits, Fox read the book, “Scar the Helpful Wolf.”

The book, written by Kevin Boozer, teaches the important lesson of being generous and helpful to others by using the example of Scar the wolf, Newberry College’s mascot.

After reading a book, Fox opens the floor for the children’s questions whether about the book, Newberry College, or pageants. The questions have ranged from “What is a beauty pageant?” to “What did your ‘championship’ dress look like?”

Interacting with the students is what Fox says she enjoys most about visiting the schools. “I wanted to read to the kids because of the importance of being generous and helping others, which is what the scar book promotes,” she said.

In the future, Fox plans to visit more of the elementary schools throughout the county.
