Wolves travel to North Greenville

NEWBERRY — After Mars Hill handed Newberry its first loss of the season, the Newberry Wolves will take on North Greenville at 6 p.m. Saturday in an away game.

With last week’s loss this is the perfect situation for the Wolves to regroup and rebound before homecoming on Oct. 13, as the Scarlet and Gray travel to winless North Greenville for a Saturday night game.

The Wolves are also on the prowl for revenge, as NGU ruined Newberry’s perfect record against the Crusaders with a 46-17 win last year on the way to a playoff season.

The offense will try to capitalize on North Greenville’s defense, which is allowing 38.6 points and 442.6 yards per game.

Newberry Quarterback W.T. Murden went over 1,000 yards passing on the season against Mars Hill and is set to climb the charts towards the top 10 in the Newberry record book. He is averaging 205.8 yards per game on 82-of-149 passing for 1,029 yards with 12 touchdowns and three interceptions, with far and away the best TD-to-INT ratio in the conference.

Wide receiver Corey Washington has one touchdown reception in each game this season for the Wolves, and is third in the conference and 40th nationally with 85.6 yards per game after a 10 reception, 124 yard game at Mars Hill.

Running back Dureal Elmore has climbed his way up the charts and is fourth in the league and 94th in the nation with an average of 68 yards per game. He has had 88 yards and a touchdown in each of the last two games.

Inside linebacker Apollo Stretch is tied for sixth in the conference with 48 total tackles and snagged his first interception of the season at Mars Hill. He is also tied for second in the league with 5.5 tackles for loss. A.J. Booker also had a pick in the mountains.

Cornerback Brian Spencer is tied for the conference lead in interceptions with four picks. His six passes defended is also second in the league.

Kicker Kyle Mackey has been automatic on PAT attempts this season, going 18-for-18. That ties him with Carson-Newman’s Curt Duncan and Catawba’s Chad Hollandsworth for the league lead. All three kickers have made 18 PATs without a miss this year.

Punter JoJo Morris upped his punting average to 41.4 yards per punt, which now ranks third in the league, but is currently the fourth highest single-season average in school history and one of only seven seasons over 41 yards per punt.
