Newberry College men’s tennis player Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) and Jeffery Kiser (Newberry) have been named 2012 Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Botelho earns the distinction for the second time in his career, while Kiser earns his first honor.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria:
1.) be a varsity letter winner,
2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and
3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
This adds another honor to an outstanding season for Botelho.
He was named first team all-South Atlantic Conference in doubles with partner Michael Saunders, and the pairing was also ranked 10th in the final Southeast Region rankings by the ITA.
He went 18-5 at No. 2 singles and 16-7 at No. 1 doubles with Saunders. He carries a 3.69 grade point average while majoring in business administration.
Kiser was 4-4 overall in singles play in his sophomore season and 1-10 in doubles action.
The Newberry High graduate carries a 3.53 grade point average while majoring in business administration.
