“Field Day 2012 at Little Mountain Elementary School rocked,” exclaim students from Paige Rister’s fourth grade class.
The morning of May 17 began a Survivor themed field day at Little Mountain with six grades competing over two days during 10 challenges between two tribal teams.
The tribal teams were called the Little Mountain Elementary School Wildcat Cubs (kindergarden through second grade) and Wildcats (third grade through fifth).
Savannah Sanders, a student, said, “This year’s theme was ‘Survivor’ and each class chose their own tribal name. We named our class Rister’s Rockin’ Rebels. Plus, we had a bunch of cool games.”
Over the course of two days, students from each grade level faced each other in fierce competitions both outdoors and inside, including several activities, such as a Frisbee toss, an over-under sponge relay, a balloon toss, jump the creek, tug of war, a sack race and a kickball game.
“I really liked all the games and I especially liked the tie-breaker between Mrs. [Gretta] DeNicola and Mrs. [Casey] Willingham’s fourth grade classes to see who would win the championship,” said Christopher DeWine, a student.
In addition to these team building activities, students also attended a fun black-light dance party on the auditorium stage with glow sticks in hand.
“They gave us the chance to go outside, play, and compete against our friends. We also relaxed and moved to a beat.” Madison Oviedo, a student, said.
During the day students also took breaks to enjoy snow cones or buttery bags of popcorn.
Each day’s survival events concluded with a special visit from a Survivor host, Ken Longshore who is a P.E. teacher, during an awards ceremony. A grade level victor was announced based on the number of competitions won and a trophy was awarded. The winning classes will showcase their trophy until next year’s field day, when they will once again be called upon to defend their championship.
Jonathan Meetze, a student, quoted, “I want to send out a special thanks to Mr. Longshore for dressing up as a survivor leader and handing out trophies to all of the winning classes.”
Reflecting on the success of this year’s field day and looking ahead to next year, students also realized how much planning and involvement went into these two special days.
“I would like to thank all of the teachers, parents, and volunteers who were there to help with field day. I would also like to thank Mrs. Mack [Little Mountain’s principal] for helping all of our grades survive field day at LME,” said Amelia Shealy, a student.
