NEWBERRY — Newberry College seniors Travis Despain and Jessie Baldwin were named “Greek Man and Greek Woman of the Year” at the college’s awards day convocation ceremony April 5.
The awards are given to the senior man and woman with the highest grade point average in the Greek community.
Baldwin, a biology major, and Despain, a music education major, have both worked hard over the past year to receive this award.
Baldwin said it was her hard work, determination and time management that helped her succeed.
“It’s an honor that shows all of my hard work has paid off,” she said.
Time management is also something Despain said he has worked on. He is involved with several music ensembles that require a lot of practice, as well as his academic work and extra-curricular activities.
Baldwin is scheduled to graduate in May and has been accepted to the University of North Carolina-Greensboro for graduate school, where she plans to get her master’s degree in nutrition.
After he graduates in December of this year, Despain plans to get a job teaching music in South Carolina. He is also considering joining a military band and pursuing his master’s degree.
As advice to underclassmen, Despain said to be sure to get involved with extra-curricular activities.
“Employers want to see more than academic success on a resume,” he said.
Baldwin is a member of the Eta Beta chapter of Tri-Sigma sorority and Despain is currently the president and a member of the Omicron Theta chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon.
