Newberry College head wrestling coach Jason Valek and head assistant wrestling coach Kelly Revells recently attended the 2012 National Wrestling Coaches’ Association Convention, where both were heavily involved.
Valek was a keynote presenter for a session at the convention, presenting “How to Build a Sustainable Program From the Ground Up” with 2011 NWCA National Coach of the Year Mark Cody of the University of Oklahoma.
Valek is definitely an expert on the subject, as Newberry’s only head coach in an eight-year history which has a dual winning percentage of .789 (126-33-2) overall and .795 (115-29-2) as a Division II program with five straight Super Region I titles.
Valek and Revells also received their diplomas from the NWCA Leadership Academy in conjunction with Michigan State University.
The purpose of this Academy is to utilize peer group discussion among college coaches, athletic administrators and CEOs to develop best practices for protecting and strengthening intercollegiate wrestling programs through this challenging economy.
Further, the NWCA wants to help coaches better align their programs with educational values.
