Newcomers Club welcomes new year
by Natalie Netzel

When new faces arrive in Newberry, getting to know people may seem daunting.

However, the Newcomers Club helps new residents feel more comfortable in town and introduce them to other people as well as events and places around the county.

“The purpose is to build friendships,” said Elaine Cornwell, co-president of the Newcomers Club.

The group of ladies welcomed almost a dozen new ladies at their first meeting Thursday at Smeltzer Hall at Newberry College. While not all ladies were able to attend, contact is made by ladies who have been in the club for at least a year. Joyce Vigus is in charge of the membership area and actually went around town contacting the potential new members.

Cornwell also invited the ladies to take advantage of opportunities at Newberry College as they have events that are not just for the students. The college sponsors many events and they also have a plethora of athletics games to attend.

The group meets every third Wednesday at various places around Newberry and the club is for ladies who have lived in Newberry equal to or less than four years.

In addition to their monthly meetings, the ladies started doing excursions last year. This is a way for the everybody to get to know each other outside meetings and on a more informal level. They will do excursions around the county as well as outside the county.

The other co-president, Denise Reid, also talked about the club but also spoke more specifically about the history of Smeltzer Hall which dates to the 1800s.

The hall is used for formal gatherings as well as dormitories for some of the college girls.

In addition to learning a bit about the college, the Newberry Opera House Director Deborah Smith also spoke about the opera house and many of the events coming this season.

Smith mentioned that she was a newcomer too when she first came to Newberry to take charge of the refurnished opera house.

Last year, the opera house had 311 events, she stated and she’s even more excited about the upcoming season.

She also welcomed the ladies to come and visit the opera house anytime and if they would like to volunteer their time at any time, they are more than welcome.

“I moved down here and won’t go back. It immediately became home to me and hope it’ll be home to you,” said Smith.
