NEWBERRY — Newberry College has signed All-State Cole Birchfield from Dade County High School in Georgia.
Head basketball coach Dave Davis said the 6-foot shooting guard averaged 29.9 points per game and scored 59 points including 13 3-pointers in a game against Chattanooga-Howard, tying a state record for made 3-pointers in one game.
“Cole can really shoot and score the basketball,” said Davis. “My assistant Chase Campbell did an excellent job recruiting Cole and we are extremely fortunate to have him with us. He brings passion and work ethic that often as coaches, we must work very hard to instill in our student athletes. He has a chance to make an impact right away for us.”
Birchfield led his team to a career 91-25 record and was named 2nd Team All-State as a senior. He was named All-Region as both a junior and senior and was the 2013 Region Player of the Year.
Cole scored 1,742 career points including 325 3-pointers. Along with his 59-point outburst, he scored 40 or more three times this past season. He was also named to the prestigious Chattanooga Free Press Super Ten Team composed of players from the Chattanooga area including Northwest Georgia, Southeast Tennessee, and Northeast Alabama.
Birchfield carries a 3.7 GPA and is ranked 13th in his class.
“Newberry College got a steal and a lot of people missed in recruiting on this young man,” said Glen Hicks, legendary Dade County High and 37-year coaching veteran.
