One of Newberry County’s own graduates is now principal at Boundary Street Elementary.
Kim Hamilton just started her new educational administration position Monday and is excited to be at the school.
Her tone exemplifies eagerness and while there is anxiousness that comes with change, it is something that is refreshing for her.
It’s an “opportunity for growth,” says Hamilton and she’s eager and willing to take off where former principal Dr. Timothy Hunter left off.
Hamilton acknowledges that Hunter has done some great things and she’s excited to take the school to the next level.
Hamilton grew up in the Whitmire area, along with her sister and fellow principal of Pomaria-Garmany, Beth Brooks.
She was valedictorian of her high school class, having graduated in 1998.
Education is common denominator in Hamiton’s family it seems. Along with her sister, Brooks, her mother was also a teacher at Gallman.
Her dad was not in teaching, but Hamilton says he was definitely a “backbone.”
In fact, she describes her father as the type of guy who asked why she got a B instead of an A and always pushed her to excel.
That was an influence as to why she was valedictorian.
Hamilton graduated from S.C. State with her degree in elementary education and then received a fellowship to Clemson where she received her master’s in human resources and technology in a year.
She knew she wanted to come back home and teach and just give back, she explains, so she began teaching at Whitmire Middle. She taught all subjects. She then became the science coach at Newberry Middle where she also coached girls volleyball and basketball. Then she moved on to become assistant principal at Newberry High for a couple of years.
Now, she leading the younger students and she says she is looking forward to working with a great staff as well as the students.
She knows she can always turn to her sister at Pomaria-Garmany who she describes as a role model and inspiration. Hamilton is the youngest of the sisters so she looks up to both of her sisters.
Hamilton has been married to Derrick Hamilton for a few years and has a son, Cade Hamilton, who just turned one.
